So, on top of everyone’s favorite list of 2018 is this one. The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo. And I must say, I agree with them. I must say I had a hard time really “coming into†the story, but it grabbed me after about 10% into it.One minute I loved Evelyn, the next I hated her. I think Taylor Jenkins Reid did an absolute perfect job portraying her. It felt like I was reading an actual biography or memoir from someone. Everything was so realistic. I loved reading about Hollywood and the filming industry in the 40’s and 50’s. Such a different time we are living in right now. I loved to read about every relationship Evelyn has been through. Major bonus points for the representation of a lesbian romance in here. This one is definitely one for your 2019 tbr if you haven’t read it already!

I just finished reading and I am totally in love with it! I started reading yesterday and couldn’t put it down except for sleeping! It is a perfect mix of a great Hollywood story and a romantic novel to say it in short words.

When The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo came out, it seemed to be the only thing everyone wanted to talk about. I was a bit sceptic to be honest. A movie icon that’s been married 7 times? That woman would probably be a spoiled (pardon me) b**** that only cares for herself and her fame. But that’s not quite what we get.We meet Evelyn Hugo, a woman desperate to escape her former life, willing to do almost everything to achieve her dreams. She’s is not a nice person, but her ambition and ruthlessness make you admire her nonetheless. She is disillusioned with the world, knows its horrors and unfairness.Basically, she’s the original Slytherin.But that’s not the only side to her. On her way to the top, she finds friendship and love and family. It is not only herself she has to protect know but also her loved ones."‘Nothing means anything without you,’ she said. ‘Everything that isn’t you is a pile of dog sh*t.’"I loved seeing old Hollywood behind-the-scenes and the machinations that controlled showbiz. Friendships barely existed, everyone just focused on their own success. You were friends as long as you had the same enemy and that’s it. The few real friendships seemed even more precious and pure because of that."People think that intimacy is about sex. But intimacy is about truth. When you realize you can tell someone your truth, when you can show yourself to them, when you stand in front of them bare and their response is ‘you’re safe with me’- that’s intimacy."Other important themes are beauty and sexuality. We switch between first person narrators Monique and Evelyn and it just works.There is no real plot twist in this book (but some things are still unexpected, so I recommend you not to read every review you encounter. Some people don’t get it that you don’t need to know everything before going into a book). We know that Monique’s and Evelyn’s lives are somehow connected. There are several mentions and hints throughout the book and instead of shocking you with revelation after revelation, anticipation slowly builds. You suspect – maybe even know – what is going on and just want to see it confirmed.I feel like I actually know these characters. Taylor Jenkins Reid made them so real, I couldn’t help but feel with them. I admit that I got teary-eyed a few times.This review doesn’t really manage to convey my feelings towards this book but well… This has definitely become a favourite of mine. I don’t know how I can hate and love Evelyn Hugo at the same time but that’s just how it is.The hype is real.
This book is a mixed bag for me. I did not expect it to be mainly a love story. I also anticipated hearing more about the “old Hollywood†and how it all worked. But there is just a little bit of it in the book. The main focus is on the tumultuous love life of Evelyn.Evelyn Hugo is a Hollywood legend. She is living a reclusive life now in New York. But suddenly she wants to get her biography written and she chooses Monique to write it. Monique is still struggling in her job and she does not know why Evelyn chooses her. But of course she wants to do it. So Monique comes to Evelyn’s apartment every day and listens to her story.I enjoyed the book because of the writing style. It is an easy read and I became also fascinated by the ruthless character of Evelyn. But I am not as thrilled as many other readers. This is mainly because I am not a huge fan of love stories and that is what this book is. It is wrapped in a bit of old movie star glamour but at the end it is all about that one true love in Evelyn’s life.Evelyn is a very complex and lifelike character. She is the reason I give 3,5 stars. She is really something and I liked her. But all other characters fall flat. Monique has almost no personality. She asks Evelyn all the time stupid questions and I was wondering why on earth Evelyn chooses her to write her story. But of course there is a connection and a “twist†which reveals everything.I think this was just not the perfect book for me personally because there are many raving reviews out there. I am not over the moon but it was an easy and also entertaining read.
